Ishmeet couldn't swim, say friends

Singer who died in Maldives pool is remembered warmly by co-contestants as a man who was polite but liked to prove himself.

Ishmeet Singh, the Voice of India winner who drowned in a Maldives pool couldn't swim, say his friends.

Harshit Saxena, who was a finalist on VOI, lived with Ishmeet during the Voice of India shoot. "We used to live together during the shooting of both VOI and Superstar. We never saw him swim. There was a large pool quite close to our flat and he would come there and sit by it but he never went in. He didn't know how to swim," said Harshit who was also meant to be in the Maldives with Ishmeet and singers Sumitra Iyer and Vyom from Chhote Ustaad. He says, he cancelled his tickets "because of personal reasons" Harshit adds sadly, "We were supposed to do a live performance in August."

"Ishmeet was a man who had the nature of proving himself" says Harshit, "he liked to do experiments and it might have been that people got excited in the resort with the pool there. Ishmeet was only 19 and might have gone into the pool just for fun." Harshit has many questions about the incident: "If there were people with him in the pool, why did they not try and rescue him?"

"I'll only get the answers when they return," he said, "I spoke to Ishmeet 15 days ago and didn't imagine that it would be the last time we would speak. I can understand the condition of his family: He was an only son and I don't know how they will cope with this tragedy" worries Harshit.
Ishmeet's co-contestant on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, Abhijeet Sawant said he remembered Ishmeet's maturity despite his young years. "When I and Debojit were discussing something he would chat with us really nicely. He was very focussed on his singing, and said he wanted to be a chartered accountant," recalls Abhijeet. Abhijeet said he was surprised that the accident would happen in a pool. "Swimming pools are never so deep that people cannot be rescued from them," he said, "and if you're not in the water in Maldives, there's no point in going there". Abhijeet didn't think of Ishmeet as being the kind of person who would take risks, saying that "he was never adventurous." "I wish I had been there with him," he added, "I know how to swim and I would have rescued him."

Abhaas Joshi, who participated in Voice of India says he was also supposed to be in the Maldives but couldn't make it because of another shoot. "I was told by the event organiser that Ishmeet had been in an accident so I was tense about him," says Abhaas, "but I didn't think that such bad news would follow," he adds. "When he called again he told us that Ishmeet jumped into the pool from a height and hurt himself. When the doctors were called in they said he was dead."

"We were together for eight months and he was a very simple guy, never doing anything in a hurry," reminisceses Abhaas, who heard about the death while he was at work. "I was shooting with Gajji (Gajendra Siingh, maker of VOI) and he broke down in front of us. He could not continue shooting after that and left the sets,” says Abhaas.

Ishmeet was in his second year at college and landed in Maldives on Tuesday morning. His funeral will take place in Ludhiana on Wednesday.

In a tragic twist of events, Voice of India 2007's winner, Ishmeet Singh, passed away yesterday.

Ishmeet Singh, Star Voice Of India's winner last year, passed away in a swimming accident in the Maldives on Tuesday morning. He drowned in his hotel's swimming pool.

Reports coming in suggest that 20 year old Ishmeet was in the hotel pool with his friends when the incident occurred. Ishmeet was immediately rushed to the local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police authorities in Maldives have not yet released an official statement.

As news of Ishmeet's death spread in India, there was a sense of shock in the Music fraternity. Legendary singer Lata Mangeskar expressed "deep shock." Abhijeet Bhattcharya ,who judged Ishmeet and was his proud supporter in VOI, said it was impossible for him to accept this news. "I don't know how to react, he was like my son. I can't believe that Ishmeet is no more."

Ishmeet Singh was from Ludhiana. He won Star Plus's singing talent show Amul Star Voice Of India 2007 by defeating Harshit Saxena.

Since 2nd of July, RapidShare has removed its download limits and captchas for free user. This means that we can continue downloading files from rapidshare without waiting for an hour when we’ve just downloaded a file. If you didn’t know, RapidShare is one of the largest file hosting website. Rapidshare claims to have a storage capacity of several petabytes (a petabyte is a million gigabytes) of files and an internet connection that transfers hundreds of gigabytes simultaneously. You can imagine the amount of files that is hosted there.

Too bad RapidShare doesn’t have an official search engine for people to find files in its servers. Fortunately I found a total of 99 RapidShare search engine websites and 2 free software that can help you find files hosted in RapidShare according to the keywords. With the help of 101 rapidshare search engines, searching for files in RapidShare is no longer a problem!

After publishing an article about the lightest antivirus a week ago, I got a request from a commenter (AV) to test on Norman products memory usage as well. Since Norman is a shareware, I test the 30 days trial version. To test the Norman 30 days trial, I’ll have to request for a 30 days trial key or else it wouldn’t work. So I entered some of my information in the request form, submitted it and within seconds I received a trial key in my email together with the download link to the installation file.

After playing around with Norman on my desktop, somehow the 30 days Norman Security Suite trial subscription became one year! I thought it might be a mistake so I tested it on my laptop, following the exact steps which I did on my desktop to replicate the “problem”. I was really surprised that it was no mistake because the Norman that was installed on my laptop also turned from 30 days trial license to 365 days! No crack, patch, hack, keygen or promotion required. It is very easy and I wonder whether Norman did it on purpose…

Is the iPhone a serious platform the video game industry needs to start paying attention to?

That’s a question Stephen and I posed to executives at both Nintendo and Sony, companies with a heavy investment in the handheld gaming space and its future, last week at E3.

First up, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime…

Multiplayer: What do you make of the iPhone? The iPhone just got into gaming a couple of Fridays ago. And they had more games at launch than the DS had launch or the PSP had at launch. And it was a sign that there may be more aggression for gaming from Apple with this device than there had been with previous devices. It certainly is much more expensive than the DS. But how are you perceiving Apple’s iPhone entry into gaming and the effect it may have on the handheld gaming market?

Fils-Aime: From our standpoint, we are aware of what the iPhone is doing. We certainly monitor it. But just like in the home console space we’re focused on doing what it is we do well. Installed based by next march of 100 million [DS] units — and that’s a worldwide number. In the U.S. we’re at 20 million. And so we’ve got a large installed base that we’re looking to drive even further and to sell software into. That’s our focus. We’ll see what happens with the iPhone but it is not something that will make us change our direction.

Next up, Sony’s senior marketing manager for PSP, John Koller…
Multiplayer: Do you view the iPhone, now that Apple’s launched an application store with games, as a gaming competitor? Do you consider that part of your competition?
Koller: I think indirectly it’s a competitor, but it’s indirectly just like the Zune is and the DS is to a degree because it doesn’t offer everything that the PSP does. In terms of the iPhone, it’s rooted in telephony, right? It’s in the name. The person is purchasing it primarily as a phone first and foremost, whereas a person buying a PSP is buying it first and foremost for games — over 70% buy it [PSP] just for games. So it’s a little bit of a different consumer base.
Not saying we’re not looking at it intently because we are. The amount of VC [Venture Capital] money that’s pouring in, you’ve gotta actually look at it. You’ve gotta see what they’re doing. Most analysts that we talk to say that the competition for iPhone is actually against DS and that type of gameplay. PSP is much more of a rich experience in terms of console gaming on the go. Not that we’re not looking at it, but I think there’s some other ways to kind of parse that discussion.
Multiplayer: So if you’re not looking at it as something directly in competition with PSP, is that something Sony would look at something to work with, as opposed to against?
Koller: Most of our efforts — pretty much all of our efforts on the handheld side — are PSP-related. We have extended into phone several years ago; we had a “SOCOM” application and a “Ratchet” [game] through our Sony Pictures group. But in general we try to stay resident to PSP just because not only is that where our revenue is, but also because that’s our handheld product. We want to stay true to that.
While Fils-Aime and Koller both dance around the issue a bit, it’s apparent both Nintendo and Sony are closely following how the iPhone performs. Readers, assuming both the iPhone and iPod Touch continue to sell well, who do you think Apple poses the bigger threat to — Sony, Nintendo or perhaps both?
